It's Thursday! The day of the week where we throw back to a great ABL memory I have experienced over the last three seasons.
-New Years Eve 2011-
Melbourne Aces were playing a doubleheader! No better way to see in the new year than watch a game in glorious weather!
During the first game my favourite player, Justin Huber, broke a beautiful bat of his at the plate. I really wanted to go up and ask if I could have it and thought I would wait til the end of the game. A few innings later, to my shock and horror, I watched as a lady stood at the dugout and asked for the bat. I was shattered more than the bat! It was a beautiful bat indeed!!
As he came up to the on deck circle I said to him, "Hey Huber, if you crack another bat, can I please line up for it?"
He nodded with a grin and I was so excited as it was a goal of mine to own a few bats of his. Bats get cracked regularly at games but who knew how long it would be before Huber cracked another one!
Later that night, he came out during game 2 and true to form, he was having a good night at the plate.
I can't say he put extra power on the bat as he swung at the pitch, but the bat cracked as he hit a line drive down the middle and was out at first base.
I turned to Tracey the moment I heard that beautiful sound and said, "He cracked the bat! That bat just cracked!"
Usually batters out at first base return to the dugout while the batboy fetches the bat. Instead, Huber went back and picked up his cracked bat, examining it as he walked along the fence line where we were sitting. He looked up at me and I whispered, "Is it cracked?" he nodded! I responded, "Can I please have it?" He nodded again.
I started doing the Billy giggle as I was so excited that in the same day, he had cracked two bats!
I went over to the dugout at the end of the innings and he gave me the bat which he later signed! I was so overwhelmed, I sat in my seat and cried for the next two innings! Best New Years Eve ever!!!
It's one of 3 bats I now own of his. The cracked bats always tell a good story of battle at home plate! Thanks Huber for making a dream of mine come true!
